Montana County Histories Online

Together these books tell the story of Native American life, early white settlement, homesteaders, ranches, clubs, civic organizations, communities, schools, soldiers, teachers, and teams. Most books are organized alphabetically and contain photographs and personal reminiscences. Some include maps to ranches, post offices, homesteads, schools, and oil fields.

Using gifts from Humanities Montana, the Montana Historical Society has digitized 37 histories of Montana counties. These works are freely available on the Montana Memory Project. On that site, enter a name, word, or phrase in the search box and retrieve every page on which the term appears.
